Why Keeping Your Dental Appointments Is a Safe Idea Amid Coronavirus

Mar 17, 2020

Dr. Burr Bakke, award-winning implant, cosmetic, and restoration dentist of World Class Dentistry in Sarasota, FL, shines light in the age of coronavirus to help us understand how dentistry is safe and why you should keep your dental appointments.

  1. Dental practices have been dealing with viruses and bacteria since the beginning of time and are equipped with proper protocols and products that are mandated to them. This includes sterilizing equipment, bagging materials properly, and sterilizing proactively. Instruments are never opened until a patient sits down, and when a patient leaves, all operatories are wiped down repeatedly and sterilized because we use bacteria-killing Ozone. This ensures that patients arrive at a very clean and healthy environment.
  2. We still implement distance in the age of COVID-19, but we have a unique approach for situations like this. When you arrive at World Class Dentistry for your appointment, take an elevator and you will be greeted by our receptionist, who uses a brand-new, state-of-the-art thermometer to check your temperature. This high-end technology works fast and provides not only patients with their current temperature but lets our staff make sure patients arriving are healthy and do not have a fever. This thermometer is pointed at the center of the forehead, where a beam of light is able to read the temperature and immediately give us accurate information. Once we are able to identify that patients are healthy, we proceed to move back to the treatment room. We start by giving every patient a glass of ozonated water, which you rinse and gargle with it for about 30 seconds to a minute and then spit out. You might swallow a little of it but that is okay because it kills bacteria. Watch the Ozone video here to learn more.
  3. We mitigate spreading germs with Ozone in all facets of the practice, including the isolation of a single tooth, utilizing oxygen sources, and we use isolation of all kinds, including extra suction tips. Hygienists have Ozone water running through their cavitrons cleaning, which sterilizes, cleans, and disinfects all those pocket areas around teeth and the mouth with the Ozone water.

The dentist’s office is a safe place to be and we ensure our community and patients that our practice continues implementing mandatory protocols to provide you with an environment that is supported to continue servicing your dental needs. Keeping your dental appointments and continuing with your dental work is crucial to your overall health. Do not ignore it!

We recommend all patients keep their scheduled appointments and any patients with recent dental issues call us immediately. Ignoring your dental health—especially emergencies that arise like a broken tooth, infections, cavities, jaw pain, or bleeding gums, to name a few—can cause serious long-term health problems because the bacteria and viruses will worsen and continue to travel through your body.
